Personalized Nutrition: The Next Revolution in Health and Longevity
🇬🇷 Διαβάστε στα Ελληνικά
There was a time when nutrition was simpler. Fruit, exercise and good hydration every day was the trifecta of health for every person, or so we thought. Everyone followed the same recommendations, the same "shoulds" and "shouldn'ts". But what happens when those guidelines don't work for everyone?
You think you're doing everything right, but you find it hard to lose weight, you feel tired, bloated and in a bad mood. You think it's your body's fault and that something is "stuck". But it's not your fault, it's not your body's fault. It's that you're not giving it what it really needs.
That's where Personalization comes in. A word that has become familiar on hearing it in recent years and what it is essentially trying to capture is that everybody is unique and so should be its diet. The concept of personalized/precision nutrition is based on a fundamental principle. This practically means that what is beneficial for one person does not mean that it works just as well for another.
Personalized Nutrition uses the unique characteristics of individuals to formulate nutritional approaches to prevent, manage and treat disease, and enhance overall health. Unique characteristics include an individual's genetic information, biochemical markers, medical history, socioeconomic status, gender, race, ethnicity, and daily habits that determine the functionality of the body.
But why are general population-based dietary recommendations ultimately not as effective?
There are many reasons why this is the case. First, biological diversity between people makes even identical twins have significant differences in the way their bodies respond to food. This means that one general guideline may not fit all. It also takes into account multiple factors of an individual's biology and characteristics making the guidelines more relevant and applicable. Furthermore, importantly, it improves compliance. Think about how much more likely you are to follow guidelines that are tailored to your own needs, habits and tastes than recommendations that seem difficult or unclear, as recommendations that are derived for the general population tend to be. Many studies, in fact, identify extremely better health outcomes when personalisation is present. And in all of this, the mindset shift caused by personalised nutrition, which focuses on quality, personal experience and gut health, plays an important role. The types and amount of bacteria we have in our gut are unique to each individual and our diet can determine which types of bacteria live in our digestive system. These in turn determine how we break down certain foods and what types of foods are most beneficial to our bodies.
But let's see what we can do to personalise our diet.
Biochemical tests: «Speaking the Language of the Body»
Think of your body as a brilliant machine that daily signals your brain about any of its functions. Through special biochemical tests you can find out if you are deficient in vitamins, if your metabolism needs support or if your body's inflammation levels are high for no apparent reason. It is a reflection of your daily life.
Based on the results, The Biohack Project's expert scientific team can see what you really need, e.g. supplements, less sugar, maybe more omega-3 fats?
DNA analysis: «Your Personal Health Guide»
Is there anything more accurate about your body than your own genome? When your DNA can reveal how you should be nourished, the game becomes very easy. Genetic tests reveal your "predispositions". For example, you can find out if your body metabolizes lactose more slowly or if you are predisposed to elevated blood glucose. It also shows how the body handles various substances such as caffeine. Have you ever noticed that some people are calm while drinking multiple cups of coffee during the day, while you feel nervous after just one cup? Coffee beans contain phytochemicals with health benefits, but not everyone can tolerate the side effects of caffeine content.
The Biohack Project team explains the results of your analysis and gives you the necessary direction.
It is important to remember that knowledge is not a reason for worry, it is a reason for adaptation, empowerment and awareness. The combination of the above yields recommendations that are not based on trends. They are based on you.
If biohacking is the art of optimizing the body and mind, personalized nutrition is definitely the foundation. The future of nutrition is not about trends. It's about knowing yourself. Science meets everyday life, and at The Biohack Project we can help you live better by giving your body what it really needs.
